Ever since Square’s HD-2D style was introduced in Octopath Traveler, fans have been begging them to do more than side games and spinoffs…a Final Fantasy in that style would be super. During the Summer Game Fest, it was revealed they finally listened: they’re calling it Final Fantasy Resonance, and it ships in just four months.
No, it’s not a mainline Final Fantasy (that’s never happening) but it’s close enough, and it features cameos from FF characters across the series’ history. You can see Cloud, Noctis and Lightning in the trailer and more are promised, along with the classic creatures like Chocobos, Moogles and the dreaded Malboros.
“Our tale begins with the encounter of a mysterious warrior shrouded in darkness, seeking to shatter the eight crystals that sustain this world,” Square narrates. “The first to fall is the Earth Crystal, long protected by the Kingdom of Grandsheft. Grandsheft knights Rain and Lasswell, along with Fina who has lost her memory, set out on a journey to protect the remaining crystals scattered across the world and stop the mysterious warrior’s quest for destruction.”
While this is all boilerplate Final Fantasy stuff, it also sounds weirdly familiar in another way. Turns out this story is actually an adaption of the narrative from the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. However, it’s not a remake of that game…it’s just borrowing its story. Square says that overall, the project started with one question: “What if Final Fantasy had continued to evolve while remaining pixel art?”
Final Fantasy Resonance sounds great so far, and we don’t have to wait long for it. The game arrives on Switch 2, Playstation 5, XBox and PC October 22.
